Twenty little postage stamps laid out in a grid like somebody's album page, and every one of them is running on autumn. A carved jack-o'-lantern, a single red maple leaf, mushrooms coming up out of the leaf litter, gourds piled in a heap. Then the animals start turning up — a black cat, an owl, a pheasant, a deer slipping through the trees — tucked in between wildflower bunches and little printed landscapes with the light going gold. Each stamp keeps its own perforated border and its own faded ink, rust and mustard and moss and oxblood over soft cream paper, so the whole block reads like a collection built one find at a time rather than a print designed all at once. On ink black it glows the way old paper does under a lamp. For the people who start romanticizing September the second it shows up on the calendar.
